At Reno - Chicago, The Bloody Mary is MVP of Strong Brunch Game

Just when I thought I couldn’t love Logan Square’s cocktail scene anymore than I already do, I stumbled upon Reno. Upon entering, you’re smacked in the face with a plethora of inhouse baked goods at the register ranging from sweet to savory. Known for their fresh ingredients and wood-fired pizza, it’s about time they get credit for their stellar Bloody Mary.

Reno leans more towards an Italian-style Bloody Mary. Poured with Prairie Vodka, it’s like drinking a boozy pasta sauce, but better. The chunky mixture has a light taste to it, so you don’t feel as guilty on number 3, or full for that matter. You can taste the freshness with each sip. The use of whole, local ingredients gives it that clean finish, knowing there’s a simplicity to the recipe. It probably helped that minimal salt was added too. While the bartender wouldn’t reveal much due to a long-standing secret family recipe, I can say that oregano and red pepper flakes were definitely apart of the blend. One of my favorite parts is the addition of freshly diced tomatoes pulled right from the fridge, giving the cocktail an extra chill and chunkiness. On top, a heaping serving of brightly colored pickled seasonal vegetables including cauliflower, onion and banana peppers, along with a cheddar cheese cube, pepperoni and olive, dusted with red pepper flakes. Just like the toppings on a pizza!

Out of the numerous I’ve tasted in the city, this has quickly soared into the top. In fact, I would put it up against one of my favorites from living in Minneapolis – Republic. One thing to note is they are a cash only bar, but an ATM is conveniently placed near the entrance. I have to also give a shout out to the pastries. I tried a sausage and kale muffin that reminded me of stuffing on Thanksgiving Day. Ask for it when you stop by!
